Blessing of Sacred Grounds

CORPUS CHRISTI -- A group of people got together today to take part in an annual Native American tradition.

The South Texas Alliance of Indigenous People held the re-blessing of sacred grounds this afternoon.

It started on Ennis Joslin Drive at SPID.

Local Native Americans say this is the second largest Indian burial ground in the state.

After the blessing, people didn't let the rain stop them from also joining in on a short march.

One of the organizers says he looks forward to this tradition every year.
Larry "Running Turtle" Salazar says, "Many years ago it wasn't good to be Indian many years ago we were looked down as scum, the lowest of the lowest and ever since the Freedom of Religion Act passed in 1973 now we can do our ceremonies."

Martin Luther King Jr. - Beyond Vietnam

David Barsamian's Alternative Radio presents: Martin Luther King Jr.'s Speech - "Beyond Vietnam" given in New York, NY on Apr. 4th 1967.
Every year, almost like clockwork around his birthday, Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" gets airplay. The charismatic orator is frozen on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in August 1963. No doubt it was a great and historic presentation, profoundly moving and full of dazzling poetry and inspiring images. But he was to give another very significant speech that is often obscured. That was to come on April 4, 1967 in Riverside Church in New York. There King demonstrated his deep understanding of how the system works. He moved beyond a simple race analysis to include class and foreign policy issues. He forcefully denounced the war in Vietnam. He called the U.S. "the greatest purveyor of violence in the world" and he deplored the "giant triplets of racism, extreme materialism and militarism." Exactly one year later King was assassinated in Memphis where he had gone in solidarity with striking sanitation workers. Martin Luther King Jr.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, Nobel Peace Prize winner, is one of the 20th century's most enduring figures. He advocated and practiced civil disobedience and non-violence. He said, "Christ gave us the goals and Mahatma Gandhi the tactics." He rose to national prominence during the epic Montgomery bus boycott and then went on to spearhead a movement which ended juridical apartheid in the U.S.

Jim Rigby Quotes MLK Jr. at Austin in Solidarity with Gaza

Reverend Jim Rigby quotes Martin Luther King Jr. on MLK Day Jan. 17th 2009.

500 concerned citizens gathered at the Austin capitol building to speak out against the genocide perpetrated by the terrorist state of Israel on the defenseless Palestinians.

"I am convinced that if we are to get on the right side of the world revolution, we as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values. We must rapidly begin the shift from a "thing-oriented" society to a "person-oriented" society. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered." MLK Jr. from his speech "A Time to Break Silence"

"They asked if our own nation wasn't using massive doses of violence to solve its problems, to bring about the changes it wanted. Their questions hit home, and I knew that I could never again raise my voice against the violence of the oppressed in the ghettos without having first spoken clearly to the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today - my own government." -MLK Jr. 1 year to the day before his murder!
